Quick Commentary

The AI economy is still growing at a breakneck pace, which means that there is likely still some runway for the expansion at large as well as some potentially significant upside for risk assets. The turn, when it finally comes, is shaping up to be sharp, however, as the broader economy continues to expand at a tepid pace while some long-festering imbalances continue to build (a low personal saving rate, a lofty public sector debt burden, etc.). In addition, the booming increases in capex will at some point give way to sizeable declines, in line with the trend in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The near-term tailwinds are still picking up speed, but they are also increasing the scope for a deeper downturn once they start to flag.
